FAQs

Is Fernwood far from Clifden?

Fernwood is a 3 minute drive, 15 minute walk from Clifden town centre, just 1.5km.  This makes our offering very unique as it provides access to a thriving town although when at Fernwood you feel a million miles away from civilisation!

Where is Clifden?

Clifden, the capital of Connemara is located 75km west of Galway city.  You should always allow 1hour 15 minutes for the drive from Galway city to Clifden.   Prepare for jaw-dropping scenery on this drive as you leave Oughterard and get your first glimpse of the mountains and unique landscape that Connemara is famous for.  Clifden is as far west as you can come, next stop Nova Scotia.

Will I need a car?

In our opinion a car would be beneficial but not essential.  We have had numerous guests arrive by bus from Galway city.  Most people are happy to walk from Clifden to Fernwood however we are on hand if you need a lift from the bus, and to the bus, on the morning of departure.  However, please bare in mind that there is no public transport system in Clifden and the taxi service can be limited, depending on time of year etc..  If you want to explore Connemara a car is an essential.  If all you want to 'Fernwood and Chill', shanks mare will do nicely!

What is the minimum night stay?

At Fernwood there is a minimum of a two-night stay with the exception of Sunday night where we have made allowance for those of you who can only escape for one night.  During the high season; June, July and August, we have a minimum of three-nights at the weekend, with two-nights midweek and no one-night stays.

At Roundstone we have a three-night minimum during the low winter season and a 1 week minimum during the high season and during all holidays.

Do you take children (under 12)?

No. Our aim is to provide a complete escape for grown ups, whether they be couples, friends or siblings. Fernwood is a place to rediscover your own inner child, without distraction!  Our cabins are designed to accommodate 1 or 2 adults in great comfort, or if you're travelling as a family with older teenagers, we are happy that they take a cabin for themselves.

We love to welcome children at our Roundstone properties and feel that Roundstone is the absolutely perfect family location.

Do you take pets?

Again the answer is no at Fernwood, yes at Roundstone.  As Fernwood is a working farm and surrounded by working farms with sheep, we simply cannot introduce the risks of animals unfamiliar to their surroundings.  As Roundstone is located right in the centre of a village, pets can happily hang out, swim off the pier, go for long walks on Dog's Bay beach or visit the Coffee Cottage on the pier to have their photo featured on Instagram!  Dogs deserve to enjoy their holidays too and Roundstone is doggie heaven.

Do you have a restaurant?

No, all of our accommodation is self-catering.  As Clifden is a mecca of good food we are leaving that up to the experts!   There is so much on offer just 1km away, please take a look at the Food & Drink section on our website for all our favourites.

What is provided?

As all of our accommodation is self-catering we only provide the basics to get you started.  Tea, coffee, sugar, porridge oats, cooking oil, salt & pepper.  There are three supermarkets in Clifden town for you to stock up: Super Valu, Lidl & Aldi.  At Fernwood each cabin has a single ring induction hob and microwave/oven combi.  There are full kitchens in both Roundstone properties.  All bed linen and towels are provided.  Kindling and firewood is always fully stocked and we have some of the best drinking water in Ireland, straight from the tap.
