Oh dear, it's been a while.....
Where to begin? So much has happened here at Fernwood over the past few years it's hard to know where to start. From puppies, calves, beehives and bats to our sauna, Stilt House and seaside cottages, it's been all go! Clearly something has had to take a back seat, like updating Journal entries...
What we really want to talk about here is our daily endeavours to become more sustainable. I personally hate the overuse of this word but have failed to come up with a better replacement. Everything we do here at Fernwood comes from a place of wanting to make our current environment better and, to leave it better than how we found it, for future generations.
We've installed our first bank of solar panels, second on the way. We are also generating electricity from the hydro turbine installed in our river. Combined, these two sources of electricity now fully power our accommodation cabins. We have been flat out planting trees and working with Wild Atlantic Nature on our bog re-wetting plans.
On the farming side of things we couldn't be happier with the beautiful beef from our herd of Organic Dexter Cattle. Our herd is down to ten after successfully selling four cattle last autumn. We won't have any calves this year as we have given all the mama's a little break while we source a new bull. Last summer we started selling our veg through our local Neighbourfood Project which was a big step forward for us but such a lovely community focused way to dip our toe into 'retail'! Our beehives are producing beautiful honey and our much anticipated Fort Knox of henhouses is currently under construction. Mr Fox has not been kind to us in recent months... Not to mention the fact that we have recently become accidental sheep farmers, more on that later.
So, with this brief little synopsis of what's been going on I also want to set this as an intention going forward to make regular entries here to give you some more insight into our various projects as well as our future plans. Stick with me!
